what is the conversion factor from gallons to pound? relevant info added: Gallons to pounds conversion explained

Answer depends on what the liquid is and what sort of gallon you mean (US or imperial).

Assuming the liquid is water, in the metric system 1 litre of water has a mass of 1 kg - nice and easy! But for US gallons to pounds the conversion would be:

1 US gallon = 3.785 litres = 3.785kg = 3.785 x 2.205 lbs/kg = 8.346 lbs

And for imperial gallons to pounds:

1 Imperial gallon = 4.546 litres = 4.546 kg = 4.546 x 2.205 lbs/kg = 10.024 lbs

5 gallons of what? Water? Water weighs approximately 8.34 lbs. per gallon, which for 5 gallons = 41.71 lbs.

The substance or density should be noted when converting volume to mass and vice versa.
