Convert rotary torque to linear pressure

Postby kf6kjg » Wed Jul 25, 2007 5:16 am

Greetings,
I am faced with needing to know how much force a bolt will push against a washer at a given torque.

Here's the specs for the specific, but a general formula would be great:

Bolt: 3/4 Outer Diameter, 16 threads per inch
Washer: 1/2 Outer Diameter

The bolt is going through a piece of steel, and pushing onto the washer with the tip of the bolt. Here is an image demonstrating the kind of application:

The max torque I will have is about 1,260 in. lbs.

If any more info is needed to do this calc I can provide it, but I'd rather be taught how to fish you might say...

It can be assumed that there is no friction or elasticity in any part of the system if that makes the calc easier.
