Gallons in a well

Postby skylark » Tue Nov 15, 2011 4:54 am

I have a cylindrical water well that is three feet in diameter and fifteen feet deep. I need
to know how many gallons it contains in or to chlorinate it at the rate of a quart per thousand gallons.
All I really need is to know how many gallons it contains when full.

Aliquid gallon is 231 cubic inches. So first you have to convert your height to inches
The formula is:
15x20=300 inches

since diameter = 36 inches:
radius = 1/2 (diameter) = 18 inches
.
area of bottom of well = (pi)r^2 = (pi)18^2 = 1017.87 square inches
volume = "area of bottom" * height = 1017.87 * 300 = 300,361 cubic inches
.
# of gals in well = "volume of well"/"volume of 1 gal of water"
# of gals in well = 300361/231 = 1,300.26 gallons

So 1.3 quarts
