Dear convert-me.com forum visitors,

Our forum has been available for many years. In September 2014 we decided to switch it to read-only mode. Month after month we saw less posts with questions and answers from real people and more spam posts. We were spending more and more resources cleaning the spam until there were less them 1 legitimate message per 100 spam posts. Then we decided it's time to stop.

All the posts in the forum will be available and searchable. We understand there are a lot of useful information and we aren't going to remove anything. As for the new questions, you can always ask them on convert-me.com FaceBook page

Thank you for being with us and sorry for any inconveniences this could caused.

Consider 1000 bbl of 30 deg API oil:
What metric volume [cum] and what mass [kg] would be equivalent?

1 bbl = 42 US gallons
1 US gallon = 3.7854 L
so 158987 L, roughly 159 m^3
at the reference temperature of 60 degrees F used in the US petroleum industry. A small correction would be needed to 15 degrees C (59 F) commonly used elsewhere. The volume would be slightly less at 15 C.

API degree is an obscure way of expressing specific gravity vs water, both at 60 F

SG = 141.5/ (API +131.5)
and water at 60 F weighs 8.3282 lb/gallon (in air) or 8.3372 lb/gallon in vacuum.

Using the air figure (common commercial weighing), 7.2968 lb/gallon or 306467 lb.
At 0.4536 kg/lb, 139014 kg, or about 139 t.
