Dear convert-me.com forum visitors,

Our forum has been available for many years. In September 2014 we decided to switch it to read-only mode. Month after month we saw less posts with questions and answers from real people and more spam posts. We were spending more and more resources cleaning the spam until there were less them 1 legitimate message per 100 spam posts. Then we decided it's time to stop.

All the posts in the forum will be available and searchable. We understand there are a lot of useful information and we aren't going to remove anything. As for the new questions, you can always ask them on convert-me.com FaceBook page

Thank you for being with us and sorry for any inconveniences this could caused.

By converting pounds to kilograms, and then converting cubic feet to cubic meters.

One pound is 0.454 kg, and one cubic meter is 10.76 Ft². Using this info:
Code: Select all
lb | 0.454 kg | 10.76 ft²
---|----------|---------
ft²|    lb    |      m²

We can now cancel out ft² over ft² and lb over lb, giving us:

0.454 kg · 10.76
-------------------- = 4.89 kg/m²
m²

so, 1 lb/ft² = 4.89 kg/m²

Is there an easier way to convert this stuff without doing a conversion table? There has to be a shortcut, I just haven't been able to find one. Calculators only convert between like units, and some simpler combinations like miles/hr. any ideas?

Sorry if I wasn't more clear when I went through the exersize above. The calculation that I showed you tells you what the shortcut is. One lb/ft² = 4.89 kg/m².

You can only have a shortcut if you know how to get to where your going in the first place. Now that you know how we got there, here's the shortcut:

Take your value in lb/ft² and multiply it by 4.89. That will give you the answer in kg/m². Or take kg/m² and divide it by 4.89 to get back to lb/ft².

Yeah, this Kg/m^2, but how do you get Kg/m^3?
so, 1 lb/ft² = 4.89 kg/m²

There is an error in the units being converted. It should be

1 lb/ft^3 x 0.45359 kg/lb x (1 ft/0.3048 m)^3 =

16.018 kg/m^3

I'm surprised at how many web sites supposedly converting pounds to kilograms don't use an accurate conversion. I wonder how much that translates to in excess shipping costs?
