Dear convert-me.com forum visitors,

Our forum has been available for many years. In September 2014 we decided to switch it to read-only mode. Month after month we saw less posts with questions and answers from real people and more spam posts. We were spending more and more resources cleaning the spam until there were less them 1 legitimate message per 100 spam posts. Then we decided it's time to stop.

All the posts in the forum will be available and searchable. We understand there are a lot of useful information and we aren't going to remove anything. As for the new questions, you can always ask them on convert-me.com FaceBook page

Thank you for being with us and sorry for any inconveniences this could caused.

I really need to know how to convert 501 mg to micrograms.
The example in my chemistry book makes no sense. :!: :!:

a millgram is 1/1000 of a gram
a micro gram is 1/1000000 of a gram. There is a factor of 1000 difference between the two units.

So: 501 mg will be 501,000 micrograms.

i want to know how to convert units using the method below, but i don't know to combine multiple steps into the same equation.

18.46 micrograms = ? grams
mcg=microgram since i cant find the symbol for micrograms..

18.46mcg x (10^-6g / 1mcg) x (10^9mcg / 1g)

is this the right formula or do i have some of the fractions upside down?

[ASIDE: A simpler convention for using scientific notation is to use 'e' notation, where the e represents the exponent. 1x10^6 can be represented as 1e6; faster to type, and easier to read. Its the format I'll be using here.]

The first problem you have is that there are 1e6 grams per MegaGram, not 1e9. 1e9 would be a Gigagram.

In any event:

You need to have an equality statement when you do you conversions. For example:

75 cents x 1 dollar/100 cents = 0.75 dollar

Notice that 1 dollar and 100 cents are equal to each other. In your equation, 1e-6g / 1 µg is fine, but 1e9 Mg / 1g is incorrect. it should be 1e-6 Mg / g.

So:

18.46 µg x 1e-6 g / µg x 1e-6 Mg / g = 1.846e-11 g

To answer a question you asked in an earlier post; to get the µ symbol, type µ. When you do this, html will interpret is as the micro symbol. You can also do squared ( ² ) and cubed ( ³ )with ² and ³.

Before you ask, they way I was able to type out µ without it being interpreted was that I created the & symbol by using &.
