Dear convert-me.com forum visitors,

Our forum has been available for many years. In September 2014 we decided to switch it to read-only mode. Month after month we saw less posts with questions and answers from real people and more spam posts. We were spending more and more resources cleaning the spam until there were less them 1 legitimate message per 100 spam posts. Then we decided it's time to stop.

All the posts in the forum will be available and searchable. We understand there are a lot of useful information and we aren't going to remove anything. As for the new questions, you can always ask them on convert-me.com FaceBook page

Thank you for being with us and sorry for any inconveniences this could caused.

You use a process called Unit Analysis.

Set up the information you know, which is:

Code: Select all
2.3 tons
---------
  yard

First, yards, in this case, is actually square yards. In the landscaping/construction trade, the "Square" part is usually left off.

Now, lets look at what it takes to convert what we have to what we want. There are 2000 lbs in a ton, so let's add that in.

Code: Select all
2.3 tons | 2000 lb
---------|---------
  yard   |   ton

There are 453.59 grams per lbs, so add that in:

Code: Select all
2.3 tons | 2000 lb | 453.59 g
---------|--------------------
  yard   |   ton   |    lb

Now if you cancel things out, we'd get to grams per yard. Lets take care of the denominator now...

There are 27 square feet to a square yard, so:

Code: Select all
2.3 tons | 2000 lb | 453.59 g |  yd
---------|---------------------------
  yard   |   ton   |    lb    | 27 ft

there are 30.48 cm to a foot, so:

Code: Select all
2.3 tons | 2000 lb | 453.59 g |  yd   |      ft     |
---------|-------------------------------------------
  yard   |   ton   |    lb    | 27 ft | 28316.8 cm³ |

There! Now cancel out the units (Tons/tons cancels, ft/ft cancels, etc...)

Code: Select all
2.3 tons | 2000 lb | 453.59 g |  yd   |      ft³    |
---------|-------------------------------------------
  yard   |   ton   |    lb    | 27 ft³ | 28316.8 cm³ |

and we get:

2.3 * 2000 * 453.59 g
--------------------------
27 *28316.8 cm³

This solves to:

2.7 g/cm³

Which is quite different from the 12.3 g/cm³ you stated originally. I'm at a loss for that.
