Converting lb. measurement to ounces or something

Postby Judy » Thu Jul 01, 2004 10:43 pm

I have a recipe that the unit of measure for all the spices is one pound, but the quantity required for this spice is as follows:

.00050
.00500
.00300
.00200
.00100
.00400
.00500
.03000
.20000
.02000
.07500
.26500
.15000
.09750

How do I convert these quantities either into ounces, tablespoons, teaspoons so I can prepare the mixture?

There are 128 ounces in a pound. So, for example, 0.005 pounds would be:

0.0005 lb x 128 oz/lb = 0.064 ounces.

Still not a usable number. Lets try this. There are six teaspoons per fluid ounce.

0.064 oz x 6 tsp/oz = 0.384 tsp.

!WARNING!!WARNING!!WARNING!!WARNING!!WARNING!!WARNING!

I'm using fluid ounces here... That means that six teaspoons will make one ounce of WATER. Obviously, cinnamon powder does not weigh anything close to water. This method may get you close, but will not be accurate.

If you want to do this right, convert the weights in pounds to a weigh in grams, (1 pound = 453.59 grams) and get a gram scale. Using that method:

0.0005 lb x 453.59 g/lb = 0.227 g

Most kitchen type gram scales will be accurate to at least 1/100th of a gram, so you could easily measure 0.23 grams.
