Which gauge? There are different gauges for different materials. What are you measuring?

I have a chart of a few of them.

GAUGE (ga) - THICKNESS (inches)
8 - .1644
9 - .1494
10 - .1345
11 - .1196
12 - .1046
14 - .0747
16 - .0598
18 - .0478

1 mm = 0.0393700787402 inches

so now you can make conversions.

Again, you have to know the material in question and what gauge standard you're using.

Use wire as an example. All figures are for 8 gauge wire:

American Wire (Brown & Sharpe) Gauge = 0.1285 in = 3.2639 mm
US Steel Wire Gauge = 0.162 in = 4.1148 mm
British Standard (Imperial) Wire Gauge = 0.16 in = 4.064 mm
Music (Piano) Wire Gauge = 0.02 in = 0.508 mm
Birmingham (Stub's Iron) Wire Gauge = 0.165 in = 4.191 mm
Stub's Steel Wire Gauge = 0.197 in = 5.0038 mm

The gauge you used is probably for "Standard Steel Thickness", but this doesn't apply to stainless steel, galvanized steel, aluminum or most alloys. Certainly doesn't apply to wire.

One HAS to know the material AND the gauge standard used.
