Dear convert-me.com forum visitors,

Our forum has been available for many years. In September 2014 we decided to switch it to read-only mode. Month after month we saw less posts with questions and answers from real people and more spam posts. We were spending more and more resources cleaning the spam until there were less them 1 legitimate message per 100 spam posts. Then we decided it's time to stop.

All the posts in the forum will be available and searchable. We understand there are a lot of useful information and we aren't going to remove anything. As for the new questions, you can always ask them on convert-me.com FaceBook page

Caliper conversion

Postby RJSoftware » Wed Aug 10, 2005 3:17 am

Hello all;

I have a caliper that I use to measure things on my clocks.

In the center of the dial on this caliper is .001"

I take this to mean that it is maybe microns. 1 thousandth of an inch.

However, when discussing / ordering parts my measures seem to be way off.

I believe they are measuring in millimetors.

Anyway, looking at this sites chart I see numbers 254 when displaying Inches to...

I believe that I should just multiply the value I get with my caliper by 2.54 but am I correct.

I am just guessing and do not really know.

Am hoping for confirmation.

The 0.001" means the dial reads in thousandths of an inch. Normally the dial is only part of the reading, the rest has to be read from the marks on the bar that holds the jaws.

Usually inches and tenths are clearly marked and numbered, with intermediate lines between the tenths representing 0.025, 0.050, and 0.075. You have to read the inches and tenths, tally the submarks in your head and add the dial reading.

If the clock parts are in millimeters, 25.4 mm = 1.000" exactly, or you can buy metric calipers.
