Dear convert-me.com forum visitors,

Our forum has been available for many years. In September 2014 we decided to switch it to read-only mode. Month after month we saw less posts with questions and answers from real people and more spam posts. We were spending more and more resources cleaning the spam until there were less them 1 legitimate message per 100 spam posts. Then we decided it's time to stop.

All the posts in the forum will be available and searchable. We understand there are a lot of useful information and we aren't going to remove anything. As for the new questions, you can always ask them on convert-me.com FaceBook page

Thank you for being with us and sorry for any inconveniences this could caused.

Speed Conversion Exotic

Postby cigarman1951 » Mon Apr 13, 2009 12:02 am

In the poorly done remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" the object is approaching Earth at the speed of 3x10 to the 7th power. Please convert this to MPH if possible. Yes I am stuck in the old system. TKS CM

10 to the 7th = 100,000,000
and three times 100,000,000 = 300,000,000
Hope this helps

Sorry I missed the MPH part.
It would be 671080887.6163206 MPH
Pretty fast, huh?

You have an extra zero in there, and that puts it just over light speed
30,000,000 m/s
108,000,000 km/h
67,108,089 MPH

And just over 0.1*c

Day the Earth Stood Still Sphere Speed

Postby Guest » Thu Jul 09, 2009 12:53 am

I too was intrigued by the reference to the space crafts speed. The previous post was correct in the fact that the sphere was traveling at just over light peed. My calculations were as follows;

3 m/s=3 X 39.37" = 118.11 in/s / 12" = 9.84 ft/s

9.84 ft/s X 10 to the 7th = 984,250,000 ft/s or 984.25 K ft/s

984.25 K ft/s / 5,280 ft (1 mile) = 186,410.98 miles/s or 186.41098 K miles/s

In other words 1.00220957 of light speed. Pretty fast huh!

No, you also have an extra zero in there
9.84 x 10^7 is 98,425,000. Also K is used to represent 1000 in metric system M is 1 million,
so 98.4 Mft/s, 18.64 kmiles/s, about one-tenth light speed.

984.25 K ft/s / 5,280 ft (1 mile) = 186,410.98 miles/s or 186.41098 K miles/s

In other words 1.00220957 of light speed. Pretty fast huh!
