Cups of Rice to Pounds

Postby Glider4035 » Wed Mar 09, 2005 11:56 am

Rice comes in 10 pound bags, but is measured out in cups. If I want to determine the cost of ingredients I need to measure by unit cost in this case Cents/Cup. Although I know the bulk density of rice is 45 I am still not sure how to make the conversion from lbs to cups. :?

The bulk density of 45 is ONLY useful if you know the associated units.

The US Rice Federation gives approximate densities of 1 cup dry rice = approx. 7 oz. (wt.), or 1 lb. dry rice = approx. 2 1/4 c. (vol.) http://www.usarice.com/consumer/prep.html

So your 10 lb bag is about 22.5 cups.
