I am in the midde of perchasing several lengths of 9x3 timber 4.8meters long how do i work out the weight of each one

Well the answer to your question is going to depend on the lumber you purchase. You give the type as 9x3 but you don't mention what kind offshore merchant account of lumber (oak, cherry, etc) which all have different weights. So based on what you are saying the only thing I can say is to put one board on a scale and multiply its weight by how many you are purchasing.
