Oval tank conversion chart

Postby nancyp@inteliport.com » Fri Jul 14, 2006 11:38 pm

Can anyone provide a tank chart showing inches = gallons for a truck mounted, horizontal, oval asphalt tank, 54" H x 72" W x 119" L. They tell me the net capacity is 1200 gallons.
thanks-nancy

Assuming the "oval" is an ellipse, this page will help you for a partially full tank:
http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/view/55092.html

For a completely full tank, V = (pi)*a*b*L, where a and b are the semi-diameters, 27" and 36", and 1 gallon = 231 in^3, so

V = 3.1416*27*36*119 = 363381.7 in^3,
divided by 232 = 1573 gallons.

If you have external dimensions, you need to allow for the wall thickness of the tank and it would be a bit less. Just estimate the tank wall thicknesses and reduce each of the dimensions above by two thicknesses.
