Forum rules
Dear convert-me.com forum visitors,

Our forum has been available for many years. In September 2014 we decided to switch it to read-only mode. Month after month we saw less posts with questions and answers from real people and more spam posts. We were spending more and more resources cleaning the spam until there were less them 1 legitimate message per 100 spam posts. Then we decided it's time to stop.

All the posts in the forum will be available and searchable. We understand there are a lot of useful information and we aren't going to remove anything. As for the new questions, you can always ask them on convert-me.com FaceBook page

Thank you for being with us and sorry for any inconveniences this could caused.

temperature conversion

I had an argument with my boyfriend. He states that the reason why people use figure 32 in the simple conversion formula (when I take Farenheit, substract 32, then the result divide by 2, that's how I get Celsium), is that 32 in Farenheit = 0 Celsium. Is that true? Could anyone explain this conversion system? What's the scientific meaning of this?

The formula to convert from Fahrenheit to Celsius is (5/9)*(deg F-32) while the formula to convert from Celsius to Fahrenheit is (1.8*deg C)+32.

Examples:

1) 72 degrees Fahrenheit = __ degrees Celsius
(72 - 32) * 5/9 degrees Celsius
40 * 5/9 degrees Celsius
22.22 degrees Celsius

2) 212 degrees Fahrenheit = __ degrees Celsius
(212 - 32) * 5/9 degrees Celsius
180 * 5/9 degrees Celsius
100 degrees Celsius

3) 0 degrees Celsius = __ degrees Fahrenheit
(0 * 1.8) + 32 degrees Fahrenheit
0 + 32 degrees Fahrenheit
32 degrees Fahrenheit

4) 72 degrees Celsius = __ degrees Fahrenheit
(72 * 1.8) + 32 degrees Fahrenheit
129.6 + 32 degrees Fahrenheit
161.6 degrees Fahrenheit

I hope this helps!
