You're already there.

1 mg = 0.001 grams
1 kg = 1,000 grams

0.001 / 1,000 = 1/1,000,000 = one part per million

All you need to do to convert is take "mg/kg" off the end, and stick "ppm" on.

isaac wrote:how do i convert from mg/L to ppm?

You don't. mg/L is the same as ppm.

1 mg = 0.001 g
1 l = 1,000 ml.

Remember that 1 ml = 1 g of water, so 1 liter = 1,000 grams (of Water).

Again:

0.001 / 1,000 = 1/1,000,000 = one part per million .

ppm is mg/g so your mg/kg is really part per trillion which = 100ppm

and mg/kg to a % --> 1 mg = 1e-6 kg so if you had 1mg and 1kg your percent would be 1e-6% or 0.000001%

Ooops: heres the real answer

1 mg = 0.001 grams
1 kg = 1,000 grams

0.001 / 1,000 = 1/1,000,000 = one part per million

All you need to do to convert is take "mg/kg" off the end, and stick "ppm" on.

mg/L to ppm is dependent on the specific gravity of the fluid. The conversion is = when you are dealing with water, however, for salt solutions you must divide mg/L by the specific gravity to determine parts per million.

how do you convert mass/mass to volume/volume?
does 1 mg/kg = 1 ppm NOT ALWAYS!!!!
If you have 100 boxes of equal volume then 1 box = 1pph (part per hundred)
If the overall mass of those hundred boxes is 100kg then 1 box or 1pph will have a mass of 1kg
Now, what if 99 boxes are full of feathers and 1 box is full of lead. If the mass of the 100 boxes is still 100kg then no matter which box you choose it will NOT have a mass of 1kg.
Therefore for heterogeneous mixtures, 1ppm does not = 1mg/kg

The 1 ppm = 1mg/kg is simply a concentration measurement. This is done after the volume has been converted to mass. Sure you could have 99 boxes of feathers and one box of lead, that concentration of lead would be higher than 1 pph, because the mass of feathers would be low.
As for heterogeneous mixtures go, concentration does not apply.

firstly if you look, 5211 is in milligrams. To convert milligrams into grams you divide by 1000. So 5211 divided by a 1000 is 5.211 grams. Now grams into to kg, is divide by a 1000. So 5.211grams divided by a 1000 equals 0.005211kg.

Simply divide by 1000

Remember, mg/kg is the same as parts per 1,000,000
and, % is the same as parts per 100
So, if you divide 1,000,000 by 100 you will get 10,000

Guys.... I understand the concept that mg/L is same as ppm but using calc with 10^6 is best way....

However... if you really need to convert something and you get this question like "Determine the ppm of 7.5mg of KCl in 850mL H20"

Simple...

first... convert 850mL to Liter... which would be .85L (850mL divide by 1000mL and you will get .85L)

Next....

You know mg/L is ppm, too. All you have to do is... 7.5mg divide by .85L and it would be 7.5mg/.85L and you get 8.82 mg/L ...

Here's how it work... just remove mg/L to ppm and you will get 8.82ppm... mg/L and ppm is just same but different unit but still same concept!

Hope it clears up

Nick

I don't know if you got an answer to your request or not but the answer is:

simply multiply mg/m3 x MW/24.04 (the volume occupied by one mole at 20C)

For example to convert 10 mg/m3 of HCN to ppm:
MW of HCN = 27 g/mol divided by 24.04 = 1.123 x 10 mg/m3 = 11.23 ppm

462360 lb x 0.4536 kg/lb = 209726.5 kg of waste water
209726.5 kg x 2690mg/kg = 564 kg of nickel

564 kg x 1lb/0.4536 kg = 1244 lb of nickel
(obviously, if you measured in metric, two conversions would be saved)

Serious

Postby Professor » Tue Mar 31, 2009 1:48 pm

If you are seriously putting your homework here and asking basic unit conversion questions then the best thing to do is go to a website, type in your starting number, change the units to what you want, and get your answer.

There are heaps of free websites that will convert units for you.

If you really want to learn how to do it, don't ask for the answer here. I have read all the replies on here and I can tell you most of them are WRONG.

I suggest learning how to multiple or divide by 1000, and then learning what all the prefixes mean.

Here are the basic ones
Kilo (k)= 1000 (a thousand)
milli (m) = 1/1000 or 0.001 (a thousandth)
micro (u) = 1/1000000 (a millionth)

TO go up you need to divide by 1000 for each step. To go down you need to multiple by 1000.

Percentage (%) is the same as parts per hundred.

To change from ppm to % you need to divide by 10000 (ten thousand)
i.e. 10000ppm is the same as 1%

The tricky part is that a kilogram (kg) of (pure) water is the same as a liter (L) in terms of parts per million (weight/volume). Get over that tricky part and you can do the rest.

Or just use an online unit converter and don't worry about it.

If this is for your science test, then give up, science is not for you.

Linear, in this context, simply means a line. It has no width and no depth, it only denotes length.

A linear foot is a line 1 foot long, so 12 in = 1 ft.

1kg=1000,000mg
and 1mg=1/1000,000kg
so 5211mg=5211/1000,000kg
0.005211kg

For example I have a problem that is convert 5211 mg into kg. I am so confused!

her is the answer for this question
1kg=1000gm
and 1gm= 1000mg
so, 1kg=1000,000mg
hence, 1mg=1/1000,000kg
so, 5211mg=5211/1000,000kg
=0.005211kg
