Dear convert-me.com forum visitors,

Our forum has been available for many years. In September 2014 we decided to switch it to read-only mode. Month after month we saw less posts with questions and answers from real people and more spam posts. We were spending more and more resources cleaning the spam until there were less them 1 legitimate message per 100 spam posts. Then we decided it's time to stop.

All the posts in the forum will be available and searchable. We understand there are a lot of useful information and we aren't going to remove anything. As for the new questions, you can always ask them on convert-me.com FaceBook page

Thank you for being with us and sorry for any inconveniences this could caused.

Find length of cylinder

Postby Solar1 » Tue Sep 27, 2005 7:03 pm

Given: Weight (lbs)
Require: Length of cylinder

Example:
Weight of cylinder = 0.35 lbs
Cylinder diameter = 0.236"

What conversion formulas can I use to find the length of the cylinder???

1) First, you have to know what the material is, so you can look up its density in a reference book
2) Convert the weight to a volume, using the density M/V = D. In Imperial units, density is probably tabulated as pounds per cubic foot, so you need to know that 1 cu ft = 1728 cu in, to convert volume to cubic inches
3) the volume of a cyclinder is V = (pi/4)*d^2 * h,
you know V, and d, solve for h.

Without specifying the density of the material used, the problem can't be solved. Of course, if you have a rod of the right diameter, you can weigh it, measure it's length, and calculate a length to cut off, L1/W1 = L2/W2, where the "2) is the length and weight of the total rod, and "1" are the length and weight of the piece you want.
