Dear convert-me.com forum visitors,

Our forum has been available for many years. In September 2014 we decided to switch it to read-only mode. Month after month we saw less posts with questions and answers from real people and more spam posts. We were spending more and more resources cleaning the spam until there were less them 1 legitimate message per 100 spam posts. Then we decided it's time to stop.

All the posts in the forum will be available and searchable. We understand there are a lot of useful information and we aren't going to remove anything. As for the new questions, you can always ask them on convert-me.com FaceBook page

Thank you for being with us and sorry for any inconveniences this could caused.

Taking a new class and am very rusty. I need to convert/figure out some problems in google earth. for ex...my first question is asking- what was the rate in centimeters per yr (cm/yr) and direction of plate motion in the Hawaiian region from 5.10 to 1.76 million years ago? (mya)...

I really can't rememebr where to start or how to set up my equation. I measured the distance from the two volcanos, 5.10 mya and 1.76 mya...and the distance is about 301 km. Can anyone help? thanks~

distance / years = average rate of movement

Using scientific notation:
301 km / (5.10E06 yrs - 1.76E06 yrs) = average rate
3.01E0 km / 3.34E06 yrs = 9.01E-05 km/yr average
Convert km to cm
1.00E05 cm * 9.01E-05 km/yr = 9.01 cm/yr average rate of movement

Movement of the Pacific oceanic plate is to the NW, more or less.
