Dear convert-me.com forum visitors,

Our forum has been available for many years. In September 2014 we decided to switch it to read-only mode. Month after month we saw less posts with questions and answers from real people and more spam posts. We were spending more and more resources cleaning the spam until there were less them 1 legitimate message per 100 spam posts. Then we decided it's time to stop.

All the posts in the forum will be available and searchable. We understand there are a lot of useful information and we aren't going to remove anything. As for the new questions, you can always ask them on convert-me.com FaceBook page

Cups to Tons!

Postby Guest » Tue May 24, 2005 8:45 am

I'm faced with an interesting challenge:

How to estimate how much sand would need to be purchased to make 35,000 lumenarias for a battlefield illumination event.

Assuming that each takes 3 cups, that would be 105,000 cups of sand . . .

My question is how to convert that to

- x amount of 50 pound bags
- X tons of bulk sand

Any suggestions appreciated!

The density of sand varies all over the place, depending on whether coarse/fine, loose/packed, dry/wet. This site,
http://www.powderandbulk.com/resources/ ... hart_s.htm
gives values from 96-130 lb/ft^3. I'll use 110 lb/ft^3

A cup is 1/16 of a gallon which is 231 cubic inches

so 105000 cups x 231/16 in^3/cup x 1 ft^3/1728 in^3 = 877.3 ft^3

877.3 ft^ x 110 lb/ft^3 x 1 ton/2000 lbs = 48.25 tons.
